MBA students take golf online

19 May 2002
MBAs, the world of business and the game of golf are eternally joined at the hip. To take advantage of the synergies generated by this triumvirate, three MBA part-timers at the GSB have dreamed up a business idea – mbagolf.co.za – that promises to create a unique community of value and offer alumni significant benefits.

Mebs A. Loghdey, Kevin Derman and Pieter Engelbreght (all avid golfers, naturally) say that mbagolf.co.za is designed to be a home for business professionals defined by two unique characteristics: they have completed an MBA and have affinity for the game of golf.

"The business idea is simple: mbagolf.co.za will not only provide members with opportunities to network and play golf, but will leverage its uniquely segmented market by acting as an infomediary that supports the lifestyles, workstyles and playstyles of this market," says Loghdey. "The business model envisages strategic alliances with content providers who will provide and continually update the information giving members access to opportunities ranging from investment decisions to better health and nutrition that will keep them coming back for more."

Mbagolf.co.za aims to spread its net further than just GSB alumni and would like to embrace alumni associations from business schools throughout South Africa. And for those MBAs who have resisted the lure of golf until now, mbagolf.co.za plans to help them see the light by organising golf academies and clinics to make the game more accessible.

Its creators feel that mbagolf.co.za has the potential to sustain a level of interest amongst MBA alumni unlike any other medium used to date for the simple reason that it has been developed by MBAs for MBAs. It represents a bridge between generations of alumni through the common interests of golf and the MBA.
