Awards by the armful: Alexis Sienaert (left), son of Dr Marilet Sienaert, Director of Grants and Research Development, has won the undergraduate category in the Nedbank/Old Mutual Budget Competition, in addition to two other prestigious awards for outstanding performance at UCT. On hand to congratulate him was Minister of Finance Mr Trevor Manuel.
ALEXIS Sienaert has won the undergraduate category in the prestigious 29th Nedbank/Old Mutual Budget Competition, winning a one-year Honours bursary to further his studies at any South African university.
Sienaert, who is the son of Dr Marilet Sienaert, Director of Grants and Research Development at the Department of Research Development (DRD), recently completed a PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) degree in the Commerce Faculty and has registered at UCT for his Honours in Economics degree this year.
This prize swells the number of awards Sienaert has received. Last year he received two scholarships; the David Pitman Scholarship for the most outstanding overall third-year Bachelors graduate; and secondly, the William Hutt Scholarship for the most outstanding graduate in the Faculty of Commerce.
According to Linda Vranas, Head of the Postgraduate Scholarships Office, both awards carry "very high prestige" and the monetary attachment is given to encourage winners to proceed with higher degrees.
