DVC portfolios confirmed

THE PORTFOLIOS of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors have been confirmed for the remainder of 2002, following the appointments of Associate Professor Cheryl de la Rey and Professor Martin Hall as UCT's two new DVCs on July 1, 2002.

De la Rey and Hall have joined Professors Wieland Gevers (Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor) and Martin West to make up the full team in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for the rest of 2002. As the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor retires at the end of the year, it is anticipated that a fourth Deputy Vice-Chancellor will be identified to assume office in January, 2003.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Cheryl de la Rey
Her responsibilities until the end of 2002 include:

• Research and innovation.
• Postgraduate studies.
• Government and community relations.
• Institutional transformation.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Martin West
His responsibilities until the end of 2002 include:

• Managing and co-ordinating the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.
• Operational management and co-ordination, including management information. West will chair the Operations Management Advisory Group (OPSMAG).
• University libraries, including CALICO.
• Student Affairs, including financial aid and recruitment.
• International co-operation.
• Institutional Forum.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Martin Hall
His responsibilities until the end of 2002 include:

• Higher education policy development.
• Development and fund-raising, in which he will assist the Vice-Chancellor who has primary responsibility in this area.
• Regional collaboration, including CHEC.
• Information and communication technology.
• Quality assurance.
• HIV/AIDS.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Wieland Gevers
He will stand in for the Vice-Chancellor during any extended periods of absence, until the end of 2002. His responsibilities for the rest of the year include:

• Faculty management, including line management of the Deans. He will ensure the induction and orderly hand-over of this portfolio to Prof West at the end of 2002.
• Planning and completion of the current planning and budgeting cycle. He will ensure the induction and orderly hand-over of this portfolio to Prof Hall at the end of the year.
• Relations with the health authority and he will ensure the induction and orderly hand-over to Prof De la Rey at the end of 2002.
• Academic staff development, including equity. He will ensure the induction and orderly hand-over of this portfolio to Prof West at the end of the year.
