Standard generosity: (From left, back) James Pape (HSSC), Jen van Schalkwyk (HSSC), Smita Sookhoo (HSSC), Roxy Kemp (HSSC) and Lwazi Manzi (HSSC); (from left, middle) Prof David Dent (deputy dean) and Donovan Jordaan (Standard Bank); and (from left, front) Jen Rawsthorne (HSSC), Assoc Prof Gonda Perez (dean), Ravi Govender (chair, HSSC), Anneline Strydom (Standard Bank), Craig Dodgen (PPS Insurance) and Karen van Blerk (health sciences) were all there when Standard Bank Rondebosch handed over a donation of R20 000 to the Health Sciences Students Council (HSSC).
The Health Sciences Student Council (HSSC) has received a princely R20 000 donation from Standard Bank Rondebosch towards its ambitious roster at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The current eight-student council had a hand in jacking up the medical school's transport system, staged a successful plaza week, and was part of the delegation that represented the faculty during the recent Higher Education Quality Control (HEQC) audit. The HSSC is also running weekly debates on equity as part of its transformation, equity and HIV portfolio, and has a few other plans - like having next year's HSSC elections run online - up its sleeve. "While we have these and many other ideas, the costs are often prohibitive," says Ravi Govender, chair of the HSSC for 2005. "The Standard Bank cheque," adds Govender, "will enable us to continue to deliver the best leadership we can to the students of the health sciences faculty."
