It wasn't the best start for the two UCT teams in the Western Cape Basketball Association (WCBA) championship finals, played on Sunday, October 2. The women's second team lost to Montana Vikings in the first of their three-match contest, and so did the men's first team against Cats from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). If it was a surprise that UCT lost in the first place, then the way they went down stunned their fans even more. The game was, in effect, all over after the first quarter as it took UCT a good six minutes and 50 seconds to get on the scoreboard. By that time, Cats had amassed 20 points, a lead they never yielded. In fact, the CPUT outfit stretched that margin to romp home 89-61. Both UCT sides obviously had to jack up their games for the second of the three scheduled games, played over this past weekend. "Fortunately, it's a long series," says Pierre Cassuto, chair of the UCT Basketball Club.
