The Athletics Club recorded a few more memorable performances at the Western Province Senior Track & Field Championships at Parow on March 25. The men, coming into their own this year, won two silver medals and three bronze medals. Nelson Bass came in second in the 5 000m, while Luke Taylor took silver in the shot put event (8.08m), also finishing third in discus with a distance of 25.63m. Back on the track, Louie Eggers was third in the 110m hurdles, as was Teran Peyper in the 400m finals. Lance Anders was out of the medals, but equalled the UCT record for 200m and was just 0.01 seconds off the club's 100m record. Unfortunately the wind was over the permissible limit for recognising records. As has become common, the women fared better in the medal-winning stakes, taking home two gold medals, one silver and one bronze. The gold went to Unice Vorster (1 500m) and Sylma Jordaan (3.50m in the pole vault, despite an off day with her run-up). Donna-Lee Adams finished runner-up in the 200m final, but also set a new UCT Junior 100m record, breaking her own record just a few weeks old. Finally the UCT team of Adams, Andrea Anders, Melissa Julius and Samantha Sheppard finished third in the 4 x 100m relay. Another medal favourite, javelin thrower Odette Olivier, missed the champs because of injury.
