Professor Roy Pheiffer, who was head of the Department of Afrikaans & Nederlands at UCT between 1979 and 1992, vice-dean from 1982 to 1984, and dean from 1984 to 1987, died on July 24 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Corli, his two sons and a daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. Pheiffer was an excellent historical linguist, an efficient administrator and a kind person, respected for his wide knowledge as well as for his moral integrity. He was buried on Monday, August 7, from Nazareth House.
