Read hope into this

Jeannette Safi, a final-year law student at UCT, was one of two recipients of the Read Hope Phillips Scholarship for 2006. Ngwako Raboshakga of Wits University was the other recipient. Safi will be doing her articles in Cape Town in 2007. As part of its commitment to the legal profession, Johannesburg attorneys Read Hope Phillips established a scholarship scheme at Wits, and a similar scheme for students from other universities such as UCT. Each scheme awards up to R25 000 per year to law students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds and to reward high academic achievement. These schemes are augmented by a mid-year vacation employment programme for those students who are awarded scholarships. Safi has welcomed the experience of practical work in a busy law firm.
