After successful shows in various festivals, Mirror, Mirror, a fairytale satirising recent and contemporary South African society, will hit the Baxter next month.
The show, written by Mike van Graan and directed by Geoff Hyland, features eight students - Sibongile Balfour, Emily Child, Sannie Fox, Andrew Laubscher, Portia Mntuyedwa, Peggy Tuniswa, Graham Watkins and Phakamisa Zwedala - who graduate from UCT's Department of Drama this week.
The play, which was the department's official entry at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July, reflects on the role played by artists to fight the oppressive apartheid regime and their role in the current "corrupt and unequal society". The play includes an opera singer, protest theatre practitioners and visual art.
The play came about when Van Graan was an artist-in-residence at the School of Drama, and one of his tasks was to write a new play for the final-year acting students of 2007.
