AU Executive response to student protests on 16 February 2016

18 February 2016 | Story by Newsroom

The UCT Academics Union Executive is dismayed to learn about the student protests at UCT on 16 February 2016, that have resulted in vandalism and the destruction of property. Such behaviour is unjustifiable and unacceptable at a university, but also in society at large. We support the right of students to protest but believe that such rights must be exercised while respecting the rights of others.

In issuing this statement, we reaffirm our commitment and support:

  • For staff and students to work in a safe environment without fear of violence, intimidation and victimisation
  • To freedom of association and freedom of debate
  • To freedom from all forms of discrimination
  • To promoting transformation in a meaningful and sustainable way at the University
  • To peaceful protest while respecting the rights of others
