Faculty of Humanities graduation ceremony - 13 December at 14:30

Students from the Faculty of Humanities were robed at a graduation ceremony yesterday afternoon, 13 December, which also saw the awarding of the UCT Book Award, the UCT Creative Works Award, and an alumnus returning to his alma mater to present the keynote address.

UCT Chancellor Graça Machel presented the 2018 Book Award to Professor David Wardle for his work Suetonius: Life of Augustus, his third volume in the prestigious Oxford University Press Clarendon Ancient History Series.

Three UCT academics received the 2018 Creative Works Award, also presented by Machel.

Associate Professor Svea Josephy was awarded for her solo exhibition, Satellite Cities; Professor Hendrik Hofmeyr, head of composition at the South African College of Music, received the award for his composition Second Symphony – The Element; and Dr Sara Matchett for her theatre production Womb of Fire.

Keynote speaker Maanda Tshifularo, head of Dialdirect insurance company, returned to his alma mater a decade after his own graduation to encourage graduands to pursue a life of learning.
