We’re spoiled for choice when it comes to restaurants, cafés and fast-food joints – burgers, seafood, pasta and pizza, or even a hot (or mild) curry – you name it, we’ve got the best.

The great gatsby – If you’re new to Cape Town, trying out the famed gatsby is a must; it’s part of the fabric of the Mother City. You’ll find the best gatsby spots in Wynberg (Cosy Corner), Athlone (Golden Dish) and Grassy Park (Aneesa’s), but there are gems across the city too (Mariams Kitchen and Karbros Take Aways). Get friends to chip (no pun intended) in and enjoy sharing a mouth-watering Cape Town favourite.

Eastern Food Bazaar is probably the “bastion” of cheap eats in the city. This laidback canteen-style eatery offers great food at affordable prices.

If you’re a sushi lover then Nuri Sushi Factory is the place to be. Find them on Parliament Street in the CBD, Regent Road in Sea Point and Dreyer Street in Claremont. There’s something there for everyone – even those non-sushi easters.

Capetonians agree that Poncho’s Mexican Restaurant is an institution in Cape Town. The eatery is located on Lower Main Road in Observatory and their chilli poppers, burritos and nachos are legendary. The servings are large, and the prices are good, so book early to avoid disappointment.

At Da Vinci’s on Kloof, you’re in for a real treat. Not only are all meals delicious, but you’ll also get a 10% discount with your student card.

Voted the best ice cream in the world by Big7 Travel, Unframed Ice Cream is delicious and will give your tastebuds a ride of a lifetime. Find them on Kloof Street and try one of their mouth-watering unconventional flavours.

Honest Chocolate is where you’ll find handcrafted, organic chocolate. You can find them in the CBD, at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market or you can purchase their products online.

UCT’s very own Food & Connect can be found around the university’s campuses and is your one-stop shop for snacks, food and drinks.

At the Food Court in Cissie Gool Plaza at UCT, you’ll find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to sushi and slap chips.

As a UCT student, you must visit local legend Forester’s Arms (Forries) in Newlands. It’s the perfect place for some pub food, especially for sporting occasions.

Seven Colours Eatery is where it’s at for some home-cooked goodness. Pick your mains, grains and sides to create a wholesome meal at the V&A Waterfront-based eatery.

If good coffee is what you’re after, then look no further than TRUTH Coffee. They’ve been named the best coffee shop in the world by UK news agency The Telegraph, and a visit to their steampunk-themed headquarters in the CBD will show you why.

A trip to one of Cape Town’s trendiest neighbourhoods is incomplete without fish and chips from Kalky’s. Locals and tourists love it, and while you’re there be sure to visit and support the local fishing community and snap a pic for the ’gram.
