Fun things to do in the Mother City

Cape Town has so much to offer – here’s a snapshot of fun things to do that won’t break the bank.

The Mother City is known for its picturesque beaches and scenic hiking trails. But that’s not all the city has to offer. If you’re new to Cape Town, we’ve put together a list of things to do around the city that won’t break the bank. Have fun!

There’s so much to do around town, and to ensure that you don’t miss out on the fun, we’ve put this little list together for easy access – use it as your very own go-to guide. It will come in handy!

Take a hike
Yes, take a hike – there are plenty of trails to choose from in the city, from Table Mountain to Lion’s Head, or even Devil’s Peak and a list of others in between. It’s loads of fun to do in groups and the good news is, most trails are free.

Table Mountain
For a trip up Table Mountain in the cable car, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has slashed rates for students. You’ll pay only R200 for a return ticket or hike up and pay just R100 to get back down. Don’t forget your student card!

Stroll the prom
Soak up some vitamin D during a stroll on the Sea Point promenade, and if you enjoy a bit of adventure, you could even rollerblade, hoverboard or cycle along the 11 km seafront walkway. If you’re keen on some downtime, pack a picnic basket and enjoy the sunset from the lawns – total bliss.

Out and about
Explore the Mother City on foot and enjoy some of the city’s top spots – a stroll in the Company Gardens, a visit to one (or all) of the Iziko Museums for some history 101, or check out the historical Bo-Kaap on the slopes of Signal Hill for some local is lekker action and a unique perspective of the city.

First Thursday
By now you must have heard of First Thursdays. It’s when Cape Town’s hottest spots open their doors for some fun after sunset. Gather your besties and visit some of the city’s trendiest dining spots and art galleries or check out one of the many cultural events showcasing the incredible talent the city has to offer. There’s no structured tour and no schedule to follow – it’s all up to you.

Local indoor markets
If you love the local indoor market space, then Mojo Market in Sea Point and Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay are the places to be. With plenty of food stalls to choose from, you will never go hungry or thirsty. Plus, several local artists are always on stage to keep you entertained.

Frolicking in the waves
Are you new to Cape Town? Then you simply must experience our picturesque beaches. From Camps Bay to Clifton, Muizenberg to Fish Hoek and all the way to Simon’s Town, it’s the best way to spend some time frolicking in the waves for that much-needed dose of ‘vitamin sea’.

Between the trees
Nature lovers, take note: Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden is perfect for a lay on the lawn, and what’s cool – it’s a stone’s throw away from campus and students enter at a discounted rate. Or consider visiting the gorgeous Green Point Park (in the heart of Green Point and adjacent to Cape Town Stadium) for a picnic between the trees, a stroll or a jog, or a milkshake at the café. Entry to the park is free.

Hey hippos
Visit Rondevlei just outside Grassy Park to spot hippos, eland and plenty of birds. For just a few rands you’ll also see over 250 species of indigenous plants, a museum and other animals like porcupines and the Cape Clawless Otter.

Many productions offer student discounts. Contact The Baxter office to find out what’s showing and have your student card ready when you buy tickets. The Baxter’s in-house restaurant also offers wholesome meals at reduced rates for students.
