Urbanisation challenges

African politicians refuse to grapple with the growing urbanisation challenge on the continent, one of the reasons sustainable urban development seems impossible here, says Prof Edgar Pieterse, director of UCT's African Centre for Cities. Pieterse was speaking at a workshop hosted by the centre, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) in Cape Town from 17-19 February. A highlight of the event will be the launch of the Sustainable Urban Development Network (SUD-Net) Africa, the first regional-level implementation of the global UN-HABITAT initiative.
