Raising the bar: Morné du Plessis (second from left) and Frikkie Naude (second from right) from the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players' Fund accept a cheque from Mark Kritzinger and Tubby Teubes of Shebeen Boys.
With some players wearing colourful rugby kit and others strutting around in fancy dress, it was a case of the crusty, conservative game of bowls colliding with the whacky and wild world of Hong Kong Sevens at the Mowbray Bowls Club recently.
Thirty teams of men and women of all ages took part in a barefoot bowls tournament and an auction, all in the name of raising awareness and funds for the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players' Fund. The fund assists victims of catastrophic or serious rugby injuries, and develops and implements initiatives that aim to educate, inform and create awareness around rugby injuries.
The event was organised by Shebeen Boys, a side in UCT's internal rugby league, in conjunction with Players4Players Foundation. The organisers raised R31 000 on the day.
The Players4Players initiative comprises the Windhoek Shebeen Social Sports Club, SARugby.com, NewbieBowls and The Mowbray.
