"The very nature of the university as we know it is changing," says Dr Marilet Sienaert, executive director of the Research Office, "and it is up to the next generation of academics – today's postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows – to help define the role and relevance of universities in the 21st century."

Sienart was speaking at the postgraduate and postdoctoral research exposition organised by the Office of Postgraduate Studies and UCT Libraries as part of Research Week 2015.

Forty postgrads and postdocs took part in the expo, one of the biggest postgraduate networking events of the year. Prizes, sponsored by McKinsey, were awarded in five categories, including Africa-specific research and a special peer-judged award, voted for by the expo participants.

Sienaert applauded the research showcased at the expo and encouraged the postgrads and postdocs present to seek solutions that will positively impact their country and their continent.
