Upper campus was calm on the day UCT exams officially started. While students and staff were upbeat about the prospect of things remaining this way for the whole of the exam period, some mentioned the uncertainty and how it added to the tension experienced by exam-writing students.

"The usual exam buzz - in the library and other study venues - is lacking. There seems to be less energy and more confusion compared to other exam times. I feel unprepared for these exams, but mostly relieved that they have started. During the protest the exam was the last thing on my mind, so it was very difficult to focus on my studies." - Katlego Makubetse, 1st year civil engineering student.
