Dear colleagues and students This morning we alerted the campus incorrectly that several universities, including the University of Cape Town, have been declared a level-three security situation by the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, which, in effect, means that the Public Order Police are in command of the campus. We have now learnt that this is not correct. The universities have not been so declared. The universities are not under the command of the SAPS. Vice-Chancellors remain fully in control of the campuses and work with the SAPS to manage any situation where the SAPS may be needed. We regret the error and the confusion that it caused.
