In the last few years Levy Sekgapane has won several prizes for his musical achievements, including first prize at the 2015 International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition as well as the first prize at the 2015 Montserrat Caballé International Singing competition in Spain.
Sekgapane's award in the Belvedere competition brought with it three opera engagements: the Gran Teatre Liceu, Barcelona, in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims; the Aalto Theatre, Essen, Germany; and the Wexford festival debut recital.
The Wexford event has the talented tenor performing at the National Opera House in Ireland on 24 March. He will perform alongside UCT's Professor Albie van Schalkwyk on piano, one of the leading chamber musicians and vocal accompanists in South Africa.
As a freelance artist, Sekgapane is making big debuts with opera houses such as the Hamburg State Opera; Deutsche Oper Berlin; the Royal Danish Opera, Copenhagen; the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma; the Bayerische Staatsoper; Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Italy; and the Opéra Bastille, Paris.
