VC’s Fees Commission report appeal and other updates

The campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. Vice-Chancellor appeals for release of Fees Commission report

In a statement issued on 23 October, Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price expressed grave concern that President Jacob Zuma has not yet released the report of the Commission of Inquiry into Higher Education and Training (the Fees Commission), which was established nearly 24 months ago.


2. Vice-Chancellor’s Inaugural Lecture

The next in the Vice-Chancellor’s Inaugural Lecture series will be presented by Professor Maano Ramutsindela. The lecture, titled “Remapping Africa through peace parks: What future for the continent?”, is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 1 November 2017, at 17:00 in lecture theatre TS2B in the Snape Building on upper campus.


3. Final results of the SRC elections

The final results of the 2017/18 SRC elections, which were held from 9 to 13 October 2017, have been released. The first 15 candidates listed in the results are duly elected, pending the finalisation of outstanding issues.


4. Mental health support for staff and students

UCT services are available to lend support to students and staff who may be dealing with personal mental health stresses. Students and staff are encouraged to seek assistance as early as possible.

The SADAG UCT Student Careline offers 24/7 telephonic counselling, advice, referral facilities and general support to students facing any mental health challenges. This line can be accessed by dialling 0800 24 25 26 free from a Telkom line or sending an SMS to 31393 for a callback. The student counselling service offers short-term on-site counselling and psychotherapy.

The SADAG helpline number for staff is 0800 171 171 or you can email office@anxiety.org.za and a counsellor will call you. UCT offers employees, their spouses and minor children access to short-term on-site counselling via Independent Counselling and Advisory Services (ICAS). The ICAS toll-free number is 0801 113 945 or you can send USSD code *134*905# to receive a callback.
