In remembrance: Philip Doubell

02 November 2017 | From the VC's Desk

Dear students and colleagues

I write to express our sadness following the death of Mr Philip Doubell (54), who was studying towards a master’s degree in the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment. Mr Doubell died tragically after a motorbike accident on Friday morning, 27 October 2017, in Midrand, Gauteng.

Mr Doubell was part of the Eskom Power Plant Engineering Institute, a programme sponsored by Eskom to provide opportunities to its engineers to study towards higher degrees.

He has been described as a brilliant engineer, a gentleman, and above all a devoted family man. His presence in the student environment is said to have provided very supportive mentorship to the younger postgraduate students.

Mr Doubell is survived by his wife Grietjie, a son and a daughter.

Details of the memorial and funeral services have not yet been concluded. The university is in contact with his family and has reached out to offer support and assistance during this painful time of bereavement.

We convey our deepest condolences to Mr Doubell’s family, friends and all who knew him.

Sincerely

Dr Max Price
Vice-Chancellor
