Dear students and colleagues
The campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:
1. Update on campus activities
Classes, tests and exams proceed as scheduled today, but course conveners may postpone or cancel events at their discretion in the interests of safety. The Jammie Shuttles are operating and all libraries are open, except for the Library Learning Lounge, which is closed until further notice. Catering services will be suspended in residences up to and including Thursday, 9 November, and food vouchers are being provided to students in residences.
Protesters set off the fire alarm in Graça Machel Hall early this morning and then left taps open across the residence, causing flooding in some areas. The staff on hand worked swiftly to manage the situation, avoiding major damage. The incident has been reported to Campus Protection Services.
The current drought means that we cannot afford to waste a much-needed water resource in this way. These actions have been condemned by the UCT executive.
2. Outcome of the SRC constituting meeting
The Election Commission held the constituting meeting of the Students’ Represenative Council-elect to allocate portfolios on Tuesday, 7 November 2017, in the Steve Biko Students’ Union.
3. Update on DP certificates
Due to the recent disruptions on campus and the effect they have had on academic activities, the deans of the faculties have agreed to vary the approach to the granting of duly-performed (DP) certificates. (This will not be the case in the Faculty of Health Sciences.) All students will automatically be given a DP for courses that finished in the second semester, except if the DP requirement was already not met prior to 23 October.
