Dear students and colleagues
This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:
1. Mental health services at UCT
The Student Wellness Service offers counselling to all students who are in need of help with issues such as adjusting to UCT, stress, anxiety, rape, sexual assault, sexual identity issues, addiction, substance abuse (alcohol and drugs) and many other personal problems. Students can call the SADAG UCT Student Careline on 0800 24 25 26 for free from a Telkom line or SMS 31393 for a callback.
2. UCT 10 km Memorial Run
The annual UCT 10 km Memorial Run will take place on UCT Middle Campus on Sunday, 6 May 2018, starting at 07:00. The race was started in 1983 in memory of star UCT athlete Merrilyn Smith, who passed away at 22 years old.
The recipient of the 2018 Lindsay Weight Memorial Scholarship Fund will be announced at the prize-giving ceremony on the day. Please help the UCT Athletics Club to grow this fund and continue to add value to promising athletes at the university.
Around 1 500 athletes will be gathered outside the Kramer Law Building / Woolsack residence before the start of the race. We appeal to everyone not to park on Cross Campus Road at the start line, which is outside Masingene and Woolsack residence, from 05:00 on Sunday as this will block the runners. Affected roads will be Woolsack Drive to Upper Campus, past the Sports Centre and Visitors Centre on Madiba Circle. At the end of the road the race will turn left onto Princess Anne Drive.
3. Shoe Drop appeal
The UCT Athletics Club is once again appealing to the UCT community to donate unused shoes and warm clothing by dropping them off at one of the locations below. The funds raised will be donated to the Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (SHAWCO) Rags2Riches initiative.
4. SHAWCO is celebrating 75 years
To celebrate their 75th anniversary, the Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (SHAWCO) are undertaking a 750 km journey to health in the Western Cape from 3 to 7 May. Join them on 3 May from 15:00 to 15:45 at the Wolfson Pavilion (Faculty of Health Sciences, Anzio Road, Observatory) for a send-off to the student and healthcare worker team.
5. Dr Stuart John Saunders Lecture
Professor Bernard Gersh will present the first ever Dr Stuart John Saunders Lecture in honour of the former vice-chancellor and professor of medicine at UCT. This year’s presentation is titled “The epidemic of cardiovascular disease in the developing world: global implications”.
