In remembrance: Johan van Niekerk

It is with great sorrow that we notify you of the sudden passing of Mr Johan Wilhelm Albertus van Niekerk (47) in the early evening of 7 March 2020. He died from natural causes at his home.
Mr Van Niekerk worked in the Properties and Services (P&S) department as a security officer on lower and middle campus. He was a quiet and humble person with a pleasant personality, and got along very well with his colleagues.
He will be remembered for the care he showed when dealing with both staff and students at the university, and his willingness to always help those around him.
Mr Van Niekerk is survived by his mother, siblings and his fiancé.
Details of the funeral and memorial service will be shared by the P&S department as soon as they are finalised.
The university has reached out to offer support to the Van Niekerk family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew our late colleague.
