UKRI GCRF/Newton Fund Agile Response call to address COVID-19
The United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and the Newton Fund are inviting proposals for short-term (up to 18-month) projects addressing and mitigating the health, social, economic, cultural and
environmental impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak in low- and middle-income countries.
Researchers holding existing UKRI GCRF grants should, in the first instance, consider whether they could repurpose that funding to address the objectives of this call. You can apply to switch your existing
funding here.
While there is no closing date on this call, funds are limited so the sooner you apply, the better.
Visit the website to see the call.

NRF postgraduate funding deadlines
The National Research Foundation (NRF) has announced its funding calls for students intending to register for full-time studies in 2021. These scholarships support honours, master’s and doctoral studies.
Please note the UCT internal closing dates for application to these scholarships. Our internal deadlines are critical to allow for the considerable processing that needs to take place before submitting to the NRF. UCT will have
to reject applications submitted after the UCT internal closing dates, as there will not be enough time to process them.
When advising your students, we ask that you please draw their attention to the internal dates and make sure they are aware of the implications of missing them.
It is important to also note that students who wish to apply for UCT merit and needs awards are required to have first applied for NRF scholarships (assuming they are eligible).
For more information about the scholarships, download the call here.
For further postgraduate funding opportunities, be sure to keep an eye on the postgraduate funding noticeboard.
Current NRF grants
Many concerns have been raised by researchers about their inability to spend their NRF grants on time this year due to the COVID-19 crisis.
A communiqué sent out by the NRF in March acknowledges that the global pandemic will disrupt a number of funded research projects, as well as the cancellation of conferences and meetings. The NRF requests that researchers keep it informed about
these disruptions and they will endeavour to find solutions on a case-by-case basis. Regarding carry forward requests for unspent funds this year, this will be considered in the submission of progress reports towards the end of the year, in
accordance with NRF policy and processes.
For more information please contact Robyn Udemans in the Research Support Services.

Keeping your publications up to date on your eRA researcher profile
UCT’s electronic Research Administration (eRA) system allows you to capture all your outputs directly, whether or not they qualify for the Department of Higher Education and Training submission. This allows for greater visibility of your
work.
Publications that pre-date 2016 may not be available on eRA, but there is a feature on the system to import publications from external sources. This will allow you to have all your publications in one place, with the option of making them visible
on your researcher profile.
Download the how-to guide in pdf format to help you through the
process.
When importing your publication from an external source, the publications are automatically housed in draft status for review.
Download the how-to guide to help you through the process.
For more about publications and the eRA system see our FAQ page on the Research Support Hub, with pdf how-to guides and explainer video.
The Research Announcement is produced by the Research Office, University of Cape Town.
