Dear colleagues and students
It gives me great pleasure to welcome the newly elected Student Representative Council (SRC) for 2020/21. Student leadership plays a vital role in the operations of a university such as the University of Cape Town (UCT). They assist in the governance and decision-making processes.
The SRC’s official term commenced on 1 November 2020 and will run until 31 October 2021. We are looking forward to positive, robust and meaningful engagements with the SRC during this period.
This year’s elections were held fully online and had a good voter turnout compared to previous years. A big thank you to the Election Commission and to all staff who were involved in running the elections. Importantly, a big thank you to all the students who turned up to cast their votes. Every vote that went into the virtual ballot box did not only make every student voice count but also contributed towards UCT recording the highest voter turnout in recent years.
In previous years, the UCT executive has worked well with different student political formations who were elected to serve in the SRC. Together with the executive, I look forward to working and engaging with this new crop of student leadership as partners in serving the student body of our institution and ensuring that we make the student experience an enriching and meaningful one.
The 15 members of the new SRC will lead in a very unusual period. We are committed to working closely with the elected student leadership as we continue navigating past the pandemic and its impact on the university.
Congratulations to the newly elected SRC members.
Sincerely
Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng
Vice-Chancellor
