On the eve of the first year since hard lockdown began, the University of Cape Town’s leadership met on the Sarah Baartman Hall stairs to light candles and observe a moment of silence. In her message, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng recognised those who have died and those who have been affected by COVID-19, as well as the pandemic’s effects across society and campus.
