Dear colleagues and students
We are saddened to share the news of the passing of our colleague Ms Soraya Shaffie (40) on the morning of 16 May 2021 due to lung cancer.
As an administrative assistant in the Centre for Film and Media Studies (CFMS) in the Faculty of Humanities, Ms Shaffie was an integral part of the running of the department since joining in October 2006.
She was a true asset to her colleagues and to the department’s students. Her duties as an undergraduate administrator were performed meticulously and she was a mainstay to course convenors, lecturers and tutors. Ms Shaffie was more than just a good worker and between classes many of her colleagues would gather in her office to share stories, advice and laughter. The infectious sound of her laughter will always be remembered and “heard” in the corridors of the CFMS.
Ms Shaffie is survived by her son Naéem, mother Gladys and three siblings Shanaaz, Leon and Oscar.
Her funeral is scheduled for Friday, 21 May 2021 at 10:00 in Century City, Cape Town.
Our thoughts are with Ms Shaffie’s family and friends and the university is in contact with her family to offer support during this time of sorrow.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
