Dear colleagues and students
We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of our colleague, Ms Vanessa Stemmet (51), after a long illness. She passed away on 14 July 2021.
Ms Stemmet was finance manager at the Faculty of Law. She was one of the longest serving members of the university community, having joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in January 1990. She was an integral part of the fabric of this institution.
She has been described as a soft-spoken and unassuming colleague, who was hardworking, diligent and deeply caring of students and staff alike. She had a profound understanding of her job and served all with equal warmth and professionalism. Dean of the Faculty of Law Professor Danwood Chirwa shared that Ms Stemmet was deeply ethical and reliable as a finance manager, “I feel robbed of someone in whom I had absolute faith.”
Ms Stemmet is survived by her husband, Godfrey; daughters, Megan and Lara; parents, Wilfred and Adelaide Rooks; and sisters, Deborah Platen and Amy Rooks-Smith.
Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday, 24 July 2021 at 10:00 in Grassy Park, Western Cape.
The university is in contact with her family and has reached out to offer support during this time of sorrow. Our thoughts are with all who knew Ms Stemmet.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
