The official launch of the inaugural Bristol Illustrious Visiting Professorship (BIVP) featuring the University of Cape Town (UCT) vice-chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, will take place on Wednesday, 20 October, and the campus community are invited to attend the auspicious virtual event.

The year-long inaugural appointment is an initiative of the University of Bristol (UoB) and brings eminent global research leaders to UoB to engage with the university’s academic community and executive leadership. The appointment and subsequent partnership aim to identify, facilitate and develop opportunities for collaborative research, strategic partnerships and mutual learning. Professor Phakeng is the first academic selected to participate in this initiative.

“By hosting Professor Phakeng, we hope to learn from and be inspired by her knowledge, approaches and ethos.”

“By hosting Professor Phakeng, we hope to learn from and be inspired by her knowledge, approaches and ethos. We will work together to build on and enhance our research endeavours in mathematics education in particular, as well as developing our institutional partnerships with UCT more broadly,” UoB said in a statement.

The professorship will comprise a mix of virtual and in-person activities, and Phakeng will pay UoB an extended visit to engage with their researchers, senior management and wider community.

The upcoming online event seeks to cement this partnership, and will start at 13:00. UoB urges staff and students at both institutions to join the event and to hear more from Phakeng and UoB’s vice-chancellor, Professor Hugh Brady, and deputy vice-chancellor, Professor Judith Squires, about this exciting partnership and what it means for both universities.

Register for the launch event

Attendance at both events is limited to staff and students of UCT and UoB. However, members of the public are encouraged to live stream the event and are urged to select the correct ticket type when registering.

Updated at 13:35 on 20 October: Registrations are now closed but you can watch the event on YouTube from 14:00.
