Dear colleagues and students
Congratulations and welcome to the new leadership of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) for 2021/22. The SRC represents the student body, which in many ways is the heart of the University of Cape Town (UCT), and is an integral part of the institution that addresses and responds to the many needs and interests of different students.
The term of the new SRC commenced on 1 November 2021 and will conclude on 31 October 2022. While we will not always agree, I am confident that we will continue to have a relationship characterised by mutual respect and constructive engagements that put the needs of our diverse student community at the centre of our priorities.
We commend all the students who made time to cast their votes online and the Election Commission for delivering free and fair elections.
On behalf of UCT, especially our students, I also wish to express gratitude to the previous SRC who stepped up by leading at a very challenging time. They took the reins during a pandemic, where leadership was redefined. COVID-19 placed extraordinary demands fraught with unfamiliarity and uncertainty. Despite the challenges of the past year, I was pleased to see the successful projects and programmes they initiated and implemented.
With the COVID-19 pandemic most likely to continue for the foreseeable future, we will work closely with the new SRC leadership to bring meaningful change and challenge each other to improve conditions for our students.
We wish the new SRC leadership a successful term in office and assure them of our full support.
Sincerely
Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng
Vice-Chancellor
