Dear students and colleagues
It is with grieving hearts that we inform you of the passing of one of our students, Mr Lwandile Bukula (21), on Friday, 21 October 2022 following a tragic car accident. Mr Bukula was studying towards a Bachelor of Medical Science honours degree in infectious diseases and immunology at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences.
He has been described as a much-loved and much-respected member of his class. He will be remembered as a motivated, bright, compassionate, insightful person with a remarkable sense of humour. “He loved the colour black, and loved Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black. His dream holiday destination was Greece and his ‘spirit animal’ was an eagle. We are devastated. Such a loss!” said one of his lecturers.
His family has been left feeling shattered following the passing of their beloved son at such a young age, just as he was about to celebrate his next birthday. They were expecting much from him as the first in the family to register at a university. Memories of him graduating for his undergraduate degree will forever stay in their minds.
Mr Bukula is survived by his father Zwelinzima, mother Xoliswa, brother Sibongile and sister Sibabalwe. He will be laid to rest on Saturday, 5 November in Sterkspruit, Eastern Cape.
The university has reached out to offer support to the Bukula family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
