Arrangements following the end of taxi strike

11 August 2023

Dear colleagues and students

The University of Cape Town (UCT) notes that the Western Cape taxi strike has ended with immediate effect, as announced late on the evening of Thursday, 10 August 2023.

After putting in place precautionary measures to ensure the safety of students and staff, UCT is now in a position to resume the usual academic and operational activities. While it might not be possible in all instances to return fully to usual operations, please note the following:

  • Academic activities: lecturers can now resume in-person with effect from Friday, 11 August 2023. However, where plans have already been made for online or hybrid lectures, these can still continue given how late on Thursday evening the announcement was made on the strike ending. In an event lecturers have already communicated specific arrangements at the end of business day on Thursday, these remain in place unless or until communicated otherwise subsequent to this development. As has been the case during this period, specific arrangements are communicated by course conveners directly to students in their courses.
  • Working arrangements: all staff who are ordinarily expected to be on campus by virtue of the nature of their jobs should do so with effect from Friday, 11 August.
  • UCT Shuttle: the shuttle will resume operating at increased capacity.

UCT management wishes to convey sincere appreciation to all staff and students for their fortitude and commitment towards ensuring that the university's operations continued as much as possible under these difficult external circumstances.

The university reminds members of the UCT community who may be negatively impacted by the taxi strike to reach out to either Student Wellness Services or the Human Resources department for the necessary support.
