Dear colleagues and students
In commemorating Ombuds Day on 12 October 2023, the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Ombud Office invites staff, students and alumni to a webinar titled “A Conversation with Thomas Zgambo”.
Date: 12 October 2023
Time: 19:00 SAST
Format: Online
Dr Zgambo is currently the ombudsman for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and has served as an ombudsman for 26 years. In addition to his work at the IMF, he has also had roles at Polaroid, Coca Cola, MIT and the World Bank.
Apart from celebrating the work done by ombuds, the day also serves to help demystify ‘ombudsing’ by educating people about this work and highlighting its value. The theme this year is “Diverse in role, united in service”.
Members of the UCT community are also invited to visit the Ombud’s Office on the day. The office is located on Lovers Walk, Lower Campus.
The main objective of the Ombud’s Office is to help seek fair and satisfactory action for individuals against bureaucratic unfairness and ensure that the university community fulfils their obligations. Ideally, the office of the Ombud is meant to be the last resort, not the early resolver of disputes. In a macro sense, the Ombud should oversee and give feedback to policymakers when necessary, comment critically on how policies are implemented and recommend changes as appropriate.
