Dear students
The University of Cape Town (UCT) made arrangements to provide mobile data to support teaching and learning for eligible groups of students when classes commenced on Monday, 12 February 2024. Data provisioning was done through the main mobile network providers.
The once-off data rollout followed a decision taken by UCT management in January 2024 to ease the transition of designated vulnerable students into the new academic year. All taught programmes assume a measure of virtual engagement, both synchronously and asynchronously, and where this cannot be done reasonably through existing connectivity provided by UCT or the students, the institution provided this temporary assistance.
The data rollout was done in consultation with the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), the Student Financial Aid office, faculties and departments, and Student Housing to fully determine the extent and nature of eligibility.
Students eligible for the rollout are those who are on structured, taught programmes, and not staying in residences operated or leased by UCT where there is access to the Eduroam Wi-Fi service; and those who qualify for new or continuing need-based funding, including GAP funding, and not yet in receipt of allowances for the provisioning period concerned.
The data provided is limited to the bundle size and duration from provisioning date.
