In remembrance: Dr Guilherme Laizola Frainer

28 May 2024

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our postdoctoral fellow, Dr Guilherme Laizola Frainer (36). He passed away suddenly on Monday, 29 April 2024.

Dr Frainer was a postdoc at the Centre for Statistics in Ecology, Environment and Conservation in the Department of Statistical Sciences, Faculty of Science. He joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2020.

His colleagues described him as someone with an infectious enthusiasm for his work and as one who always pushed himself and the team to do the best possible science. They said he would be remembered as a highly motivated and exceptional scientist whose skill set spanned pure biology, evolutionary biology, ecology, machine learning and science communication.

He is survived by his father Nivaldo, mother Dorys, wife Nathalia, and brother Gabriel.

His friends and family have come together since his passing, with several gatherings to honour his life and his love for the sea. Family, friends, and colleagues will celebrate his work through a photographic exhibition showcasing his many talents in his hometown in Brazil.

The university is offering Dr Frainer’s family support during this bereavement period. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and all who knew him.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
