Dear colleagues and students
It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing of one of our students, Nene Karingi (23). He passed away on Friday, 7 June 2024.
Mr Karingi was a fourth-year BSc Electrical and Computer Engineering student in the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment. He joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2021.
His friends and family described him as someone who went out of his way for them. They said he generally enjoyed life and got along with everyone, describing him as an academic giant.
He is survived by his father Kivuti, mother Lina, and brother Murani.
The family will bid final farewell to Mr Karingi in a ceremony to be held on Thursday, 13 June 2024.
A separate open tribute session will take place on campus on Thursday, 13 June 2024 at 16:00 in the John Martin Boardroom, Fifth Level, New Engineering Building. Students and staff are all welcome to attend. Another memorial service will be held in his honour in his home city Nairobi, Kenya, on a date yet to be confirmed.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised.
The university is offering Mr Karingi’s family support during this bereavement period. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and all who knew him.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
