Update on senior leadership appointments

10 July 2024 | Emeritus Professor Daya Reddy

Dear colleagues and students

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has a number of vacancies at senior leadership level, with recruitment processes at various stages of progress. I write to provide an update on these processes.

Chief Operating Officer

The recruitment process is yet to be initiated. The incumbent, Mr Mughtar Parker, was appointed to serve in an acting capacity in this position for the period 1 August 2023 to 31 March 2024. Council has approved an extension to 31 December 2024 or until a substantive appointment is made, whichever comes first.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Internationalisation *

The selection committee composition and position description were approved by Council on 22 June 2024. This position will be advertised in due course. Professor Jeff Murugan has been serving in an acting capacity in this position.

* Please note that this role title was previously communicated in error as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation. We apologise for the error and confirm that the correct title is Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Internationalisation.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning

This process is currently at the shortlisting stage, with interviews to follow soon. The acting DVC, Emer Prof Linda Ronnie, was initially appointed in this role for the period 17 July 2023 to 16 April 2024. The appointment has been extended to 31 December 2024 or until a substantive appointment is made.

Executive Director: Communication and Marketing

The selection committee’s recommendation was tabled before and approved by Council at a meeting held on 22 June 2024. An official announcement will follow separately.

Executive Director: Human Resources

This position was readvertised, and applications closed on Tuesday, 9 July 2024. The shortlisting process will follow.

Registrar-designate

This position was also readvertised. Applications have now closed, and the shortlisting process is set to follow.

We continue to work with a sense of urgency towards concluding these recruitment processes as soon as is practically possible.

Sincerely

Emeritus Professor Daya Reddy
Vice-Chancellor interim
