Arrangements due to severe weather to continue

11 July 2024

Dear colleagues and students

Further to the communication issued on Wednesday, 10 July 2024 following the level 8 weather warning by the South African Weather Service, the severe weather is expected to continue on Friday, 12 July 2024.

Staff and students at the University of Cape Town (UCT) are therefore alerted that the recommended measures related to teaching and learning as well as working arrangements remain in place.

The safety and wellbeing of members of the UCT campus community remains a top priority, and management encourages all staff and students to continue taking necessary precautions.

Staff are reminded that where operationally and practically possible, they are encouraged to switch to remote working.

Teaching and learning remain formally in recess since 13 June until 21 July 2024. However, should there be any planned teaching and learning-related activities that have to continue, the relevant staff should communicate applicable arrangements directly with their groups.

Similarly, there should be communication from the relevant staff to their particular groups should there be any research-related activities that have to continue as planned.

The UCT Shuttle is still scheduled to operate as per the vacation timetable. However, should operations be impacted, updates will be communicated via the usual university platforms (the website, social media and the app).

Staff who do have to travel to campus are urged to exercise caution, as weather forecasts have indicated that disruptive rain is expected. Please follow guidance from local authorities as it relates to precautions, particularly when travelling, or if you reside in a low-lying area.

Should any member of the campus community need any support during this period, please do reach out via any appropriate channels, whether it is through your line manager or the Human Resources department (for staff) or through your course convenor or Student Wellness Services (for students).

For any general queries or emergencies related to this, please call 021 650 2222.

Please stay safe and warm, and take care.
