Dear colleagues and students
The UCT Shuttle’s North stop has been closed since the afternoon of Tuesday, 16 July 2024 and will remain closed for the rest of the week. Read more about this and other recent developments on campus.
1. North stop closure
Due to damage caused by a collapsed underground water pipe, UCT Shuttles cannot use the North stop on upper campus. The North stop has been closed since 14:00 on Tuesday, 16 July 2024, and will remain closed for the rest of the week while assessments of the damage are being done. Further updates will be provided on Monday, 22 July 2024.
While no UCT shuttles will be permitted on that section of Madiba Circle, a stop-go will assist vehicles. In the interim, shuttles will be diverted to South stop.
Due to the closure of North stop, shuttle services to Liesbeeck Gardens, Obz Square (via Medical School), Forest Hill, Tugwell, Rochester, and Clarinus will be affected. Shuttles may be delayed, or departure and arrival may be early due to potential congestion at South stop.
Members of the UCT community planning to use the shuttles are advised to make provision for possible delays by leaving earlier than usual to catch their shuttles. Please also consult the website or the UCT GoMetro Move app (download on Google Play or App Store)) for further updates.
2. Road closures due to Opening of Parliament
Please note that commuting to and from campus might be impacted due to the City of Cape Town’s notice of road closures published ahead of the Opening of Parliament Address 2024, which will take place on Thursday, 18 July 2024.
Closures will affect mainly the central business district. Traffic impacts are expected in the city bowl, and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
Please also note that UCT Shuttle service users might experience some delays on the Claremont, Sandown and Hiddingh Campus routes.
3. ICTS scheduled maintenance on Sunday, 21 July
The UCT community is advised that Sunday, 21 July 2024 will be an ICTS scheduled maintenance slot from 09:00 to 17:00. Unless notified, don't expect any on-campus ICT services to be available for the duration of the maintenance slot. Cloud-based services (including Amathuba, email, Microsoft 365 services, and ServiceNow) are not impacted and can still be accessed.
Please consult the scheduled ICTS maintenance slots page before planning any teaching, conferences, meetings, etc. that require ICT services.
For more information, see the article on why ICTS schedules regular monthly maintenance slots.
4. Reminder: Amathuba migration phase 2 and 3 completed
The Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) has successfully completed phase 2 of the migration, transitioning most second and third-year courses to the new platform for the 2024 academic year. Since the beginning of July, CILT has initiated phase 3, the final stage of the migration. This phase encompasses all postgraduate course sites and the remaining second and third-year courses not included in phase 2. By 2025, all courses will be conducted on Amathuba.
5. UCT Open Textbook Award: call for nominations
The UCT Open Textbook Award, now in its fifth year, has become a vital initiative for fostering innovative open education efforts. This award addresses critical challenges related to the cost and accessibility of teaching and learning materials, curriculum change, and multilingualism at UCT.
Open textbooks, which are freely available and openly licensed, offer dynamic, collaborative approaches to textbook authorship, quality assurance, and publishing. Besides the significant cost savings, open textbooks enable student engagement as co-creators and facilitate sharing teaching and learning materials beyond the university.
Nominations for the 2024 UCT Open Textbook Award are still open. Submissions can be made by open textbook authors or by third parties. The deadline for nominations is 28 July 2024.
