Update on extreme weather conditions

27 August 2024

Dear colleagues and students

The South African Weather Service issued an orange level 6 warning for Tuesday, 27 August 2024, with a particular focus on damaging winds of 40 to 80 km/h.

During the afternoon, there were several reports of fallen trees and other debris across the University of Cape Town (UCT) campus, which are currently being attended to.

If you have an incident to report, please contact CPS on 080 650 2222 for assistance.

Temporary closure of SWS main clinic

Please note that the Student Wellness Service’s (SWS) main clinic at Ivan Toms Building, Lower Campus has had to be closed until further notice. This resulted from a tree that fell onto the main entrance's power lines. Relevant university departments will work on addressing the situation as soon as possible. In the meantime, students are advised to access health support services via the Upper Campus Clinic in the Steve Biko Students Union building (if they already have a booked appointment). SWS will contact students who have existing bookings; and regrets the inconvenience caused.

Precautionary measures

The UCT community is advised to take practical precautions to prevent unnecessary damage, including the following:

  • ensure doors, sliding doors and windows are closed when leaving for the day,
  • exercise caution when opening door or windows, as strong winds can blow them off their hinges, and
  • be aware of your surroundings when venturing outside and look out for debris that might be picked up by the strong winds.

UCT Shuttle

Please note that the UCT Shuttle might also experience delays due to harsh conditions or obstructions on the roads. Updates on specific incidents will be provided via the UCT Shuttle app (download on Google Play or App Store) or via the website.
