In remembrance: Richard Drummond

09 September 2024

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heartfelt sympathy that we write to inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Richard Drummond (62), on Saturday, 17 August 2024.

Mr Drummond was a lecturer at the Professional Communication Studies Unit in the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment.

He earned a BSocSc and master’s degrees in city and regional planning from UCT and was a member of the South African Planning Institute and the Institute of Estate Agents. His background was primarily in publishing, but he also gained experience in the property, education, environment, advertising, and financial industries.

Mr Drummond was proud of the recognition by the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) in 2015. SANEDI paid tribute to the significant role he played as an editor of the Journal of Energy Southern Africa, an accredited journal by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Furthermore, SANEDI recognised the role he played in disseminating energy knowledge in ‘Energy Management News’, awarding him the Energy Journalism Award.

Mr Drummond’s colleagues remember him as a deeply dedicated and beloved individual. He approached his work with vigour, submitting three journal articles as part of his PhD by publication, and was in the final stages of completing his doctoral journey. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he entertained others with captivating tales of his family history, and his unique sense of humour will be dearly missed.

He is survived by Sue and children, Catherine and James.

His funeral took place on Saturday, 24 August 2024.

The university has shared words of condolences with and provided support to the Drummond family. We further express our condolences to all who knew our late colleague.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
