In remembrance: Riaan Franklen Witbooi

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Mr Riaan Franklen Witbooi (42), who served as a campus protection officer in the Properties and Services department. He passed away on Tuesday, 3 September 2024 at Tygerberg Hospital.

Mr Witbooi joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2016. Colleagues have described him as a very humble person. Remembered for always going the extra mile, he displayed his experience in everything he did. He was always committed to assisting students and staff. He was energetic and loved cross-country running.

He is also remembered for the way in which he always demonstrated unwavering dedication, professionalism and a positive spirit that inspired everyone around him. His hard work and commitment played a pivotal role in the operations of his department, and his absence will be deeply felt by all.

Mr Witbooi is survived by his father Willem; mother Wilhemina; his kids Radeam, Faith, Zia and Zoe; and his siblings Nathan and Gaby.

His memorial service was held on Tuesday,10 September 2024 at Forest Hill residence. The funeral will be held on Saturday, 14 September 2024 in Beaufort West, Western Cape.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Witbooi family, and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved Mr Witbooi.
