Dear colleagues and students
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Dr Ramesh Jeram (58), who served as the head of the Schools Development Unit (SDU) in the School of Education. Dr Jeram passed away on the evening of Saturday, 21 September 2024 following a medical operation in hospital.
Dr Jeram joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2021 as head of the SDU.
He will be remembered as an astute, excellent colleague who always followed through with his intentions. The management of the School of Education relied extensively on his advice, which was always accompanied by a much-needed hug. He has led many large projects for the SDU, all of which were designed to intervene in the lives of young people in schools to ensure their success post-schooling: a profession befitting a man who has devoted his life to education.
Dr Jeram brought passion, expertise and an inspiring work ethic to everything he did. Not only was he a great colleague, but he was also a truly wonderful person. He was always ready to listen to colleagues and to provide advice; and he never closed his door for anyone. He brought humour to the workplace and was an immensely generous and kind person.
An anecdote from colleagues tells a bit more about his caring nature: In 2023, a student in the pre-service course called one of the lecturers aside to tell her that when Dr Jeram was teaching, he would always bring extra sandwiches for this young man, who was dealing with significant food insecurity. This is just like him, kind to the core.
Dr Jeram is survived his mother Kathy; his brothers Thakor and Amrit Jeram; and his sister Tohierah Takay. He will be dearly missed by them as he was close with all.
Both the memorial and funeral services are still in the process of being planned.
The university has reached out to offer support to the Jeram family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
