Call for applications: Long-term Europe-Africa WEF [water, energy and food] Nexus (LEAWEF) Multilateral Research Programme
UCT internal deadline: 6 February 2025

The long-term Europe-Africa WEF-Nexus Multilateral Research Programme (LEAWEF) is an international initiative focusing on the interconnections between water, energy and food (WEF) within the framework of sustainable development. Using the WEF nexus approach, the programme aims to manage and optimise the complex interdependencies between these sectors. This is critical to achieving security, inclusiveness, and sustainability in the supply and distribution of water, energy and food globally.

The focus of this call aligns with the objectives of the programme while focusing on two sub-themes:
• Climate Change Adaptation
• Just Energy Transitions

Application information, including eligibility criteria and details about the submission process is available here.

Call for applications: NRF-AXA [National Research Foundation of South Africa and the AXA Research Fund] African Scientific Progress Award
UCT internal deadline: 15 November 2024

The NRF and the AXA Research Fund collaboratively launched the African Scientific Progress Award (ASPA). ASPA will support sustainability research activities for early career research in Africa through the Future Earth Africa Hub. Central to the grant is the generation of timely and regionally relevant research insights, as well as career growth. The grant aims to help researchers establish themselves in their respective fields, build their research profiles, and work towards developing independent and impactful research programmes in collaboration.

This grant will consider research projects exploring one or more aspects within the following areas:
• Analyses of Health Impacts of Climate Change
• Strategies for Mitigating and Adapting to Health and Climate Change Impacts
• Governance and Financing Considerations

Application information, including eligibility criteria and details about the submission process, is available here.

Reminder: Call for applications: UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards
Funder submission deadline: 11 November 2024

The call for applications for the UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards is open. In the context of an unpredictable national research funding environment, the purpose of this intervention is to encourage applications to external – particularly international – funders as well as multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary research collaborations. By allocating fractional funding based on grant submissions without waiting for the successful outcome, seed funding is provided to enable immediate progress.

View the call document for additional deadline information and a link to the application form.

Pre-Call Announcement – NRF Evaluation and Rating 2025

The NRF Call for submission of applications for Evaluation and Rating is expected to open before the end of October 2024.

The evaluation and rating of individuals is based primarily on the quality and impact of the research outputs of the past eight years, 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2024. The evaluation is undertaken by national and international reviewers who are requested to critically scrutinise the research published during the assessment period.

Applications are made either by “established” researchers with a solid track record (categories C, B and A), or by “younger” researchers who show potential of becoming established within a five-year period (Y) or becoming future leaders in their field (P).

The Research Office will host information sessions:

Invitation: 18th World Congress on Public Health
Dates: 6 – 9 September 2026

The next World Congress on Public Health (WCPH) will be hosted in Cape Town. This prestigious event will be jointly organised by the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) and the Public Health Association of South Africa (PHASA). The theme of the congress, "Equity Without Borders: Equity, Inclusion, and Sustainability," is particularly timely given the increasingly complex global landscape.

In a world shaped by war, political instability, epidemics, and deeply rooted injustices, equity, inclusion, and sustainability are more than just themes; they are essential pillars of public health and fundamental rights that protect both people and the planet.

This congress will bring together global health leaders, experts and practitioners to explore how these guiding principles can drive a unified and effective response to the world's most urgent health challenges. Participants will engage in dynamic discussions, forge meaningful international collaborations and develop innovative solutions to advance global public health. Working together towards ensuring a future of health without borders for generations to come.

Invitation: Support the national Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition
Date: 25 October 2024 | 09:45 – 13:00

Established by the University of Queensland, 3MT is an annual competition for PhD students held in more than 200 universities worldwide. The competition challenges participants to present their research in an accessible and engaging way in just three minutes. It’s important that their work is understood by an intelligent audience with no background in their specific research area. This exercise develops presentation, research and academic communication skills and supports the development of research students' capacity to explain their work effectively.

Come support the PhD winners of the UCT 3MT competition who will participate in the national competition hosted by the University of the Free State. The event will be held in person and online, with our entrants competing in person.
