Much-awaited UCT Day 2024 almost here

21 October 2024

Dear colleagues and students

UCT Day, which takes place on Friday, 25 October 2024, is about uniting the global community in celebration of the University of Cape Town (UCT), while fundraising for student causes. The Cricket Oval and the Kramer Law Building on middle campus are the places to be on the day.

By participating in the events and sports challenges, UCT staff, students, alumni and friends will not only unite to have fun and compete in various challenges, but will also help the university raise funds towards two student initiatives: the Unlocking Futures Bursaries and the Food Sovereignty Programme.

Every ticket supports UCT students in need, so be part of the celebration and help us make a difference!

The exciting activities include:

UCT Day Alumni Book Festival: Established and emerging UCT alumni authors will be in conversation with their counterparts. This is an opportunity to connect with these authors, to ask burning questions, and to buy copies of the books at Exclusive Books.

Alumni Film Festival: Sunshine Cinema, in partnership with the UCT Centre for Film and Media Studies, will present five locally-made films, including one for children. This is an opportunity to bring the family along, relax and enjoy home-grown movie brilliance.

UCT Day’s Amazing Race: A total of 25 teams, each comprising four people, will compete in the ultimate race on middle and lower campus. Meet at the Cricket Oval at 12:30 to beat the reigning cup holders. Remember to dress in vibrant team colours!

Cycling, Rowing and Archery team challenges: Up to 20 teams of four people will get to test their endurance! Enter your top sports teams and challenge other faculties to raise funds for the Food Sovereignty Programme.

Five-a-Side Bubble Soccer: Come and have fun and display your sporting skills. Put together a team of five to participate in the bubble soccer tournament.

Campus Tour: Join an informal tour, led by UCT Emeritus Registrar Hugh Amoore, which will begin at the Kramer Law Quad, head to the War Memorial and traverse the campus to the south, the west and the north. Taking in the Fuller gardens, the Louis Ahrens wing, the Educare Centre, Jock Beattie’s grave, the New Science Lecture Theatre/Chris Hani renewal, and the RW James Building, the tour will end at the Cissie Gool Plaza.

Chill on the Cricket Oval, and network and reconnect with fellow staff, students and alumni in the company of great music. Dance, Hip-Hop and DJs are just some of the UCT student societies that will be on stage on the day.

Other activities include giant inflatables, giant chess board and a work-out session hosted by UCT Gym.

UCT Day food trucks will have delicious, affordable snacks and beverages on sale from 12:00 to 17:00. Student meal vouchers can be used at the Food & Connect vendors on site.
