UCT cautions students against fraudulent funding offers

08 November 2024

Dear students and colleagues

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has noted fraudulent posters circulated on campus by an external entity purporting to offer financial assistance or aid for students.

UCT states that these are bogus and were circulated without the university’s approval. The relevant UCT department will work on removing these posters.

Students are urged to stay on high alert when responding to adverts of this nature and to note, among others, that:

  • funders would not request any cash payment for students to secure funding
  • authorised posters circulated on campus would carry a university stamp
  • funding opportunities would mainly be advertised on the UCT bursary noticeboard.

Students are urged to check with the Fees Office in advance whenever they encounter any suspicious funding adverts.

UCT has been in touch with the handful students affected by this scam to offer support.

Any other affected students are urged to reach out to the Fees Office.

Support will be offered via the relevant departments, including the Campus Protection Services, Fees Office and Student Wellness Service.
