Dear colleagues
The University of Cape Town (UCT) executive tabled a proposal for closure between Christmas and New Year’s Day at a recent Council meeting held on Saturday, 19 October 2024.
This followed a commitment made by the executive to the unions, as well as the due process of consulting various relevant governance structures for support before it was tabled, with the executive’s support, at Council for approval.
Council approved the proposal. It is important to emphasise that this approval is applicable for 2024 only.
Staff will not be required to utilise their annual leave during the period between 27 December and 31 December, and leave quotas will remain unchanged. Staff who may have already put in leave requests via the Employee Self-Service system and whose leave has been approved will have their records adjusted accordingly.
Please note that essential services staff will be required to work during the period between Christmas and New Year’s Day, and line managers will grant the time off at a later stage.
The executive recognises that 2024 has been another challenging year, and staff members have continued to illustrate unparalleled dedication and unmatched commitment as they gave their all in service to UCT. Similarly to how this gesture has been extended in the past few years where applicable, the closure between Christmas and New Year’s Day takes staff wellbeing into account and serves as an acknowledgement to staff for all their hard work in contributing towards the academic project.
Sincerely
UCT Executive
