Announcing the 2024 UCT Open Textbook Award recipient

19 December 2024 | Acting DVC Emer Prof Linda Ronnie

Dear colleagues and students

The University of Cape Town (UCT) Open Textbook Award aims to recognise outstanding open access textbooks, produced by staff and students, that advance the university’s transformation and social justice agenda, particularly in relation to the cost and accessibility of teaching and learning materials, as well as curriculum change and multilingualism at UCT.

I am very pleased to announce that the 2024 Open Textbook Award goes to Disability Studies in Inclusive Education, edited by Judith McKenzie, Kofi Nseibo, Chantal Samuels and Amani Karisa from the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Tailored to the local context, this textbook focuses on the needs of learners with disabilities in a South African context and provides a guide to educate and upskill teachers with expert recommendations and practical solutions on how to include learners with disabilities in the classroom.

Disability Studies in Inclusive Education, and the collaborative process through which it was developed, addresses issues related to pedagogical innovation and curriculum change, foregrounding the voice of the Global South in disability studies scholarship, and the drive for greater inclusivity in higher education.

Award submissions were reviewed by a committee of experts from the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching, UCT Libraries and the Faculty of Science.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating the editors and their collaborators on this achievement.

Sincerely

Emer Prof Linda Ronnie
Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning
