Dear colleagues and students
In December 2024 I launched the Campus-wide Conversations initiative. These conversations are aimed at creating a new culture at the University of Cape Town (UCT); a culture in which everyone, regardless of their background or position, feels heard, seen, valued and respected.
To this end, I would like to personally acknowledge the campus maintenance concerns raised by an alumnus on social media. It is unfortunate that parts of our campus were in this state. University management representatives met with the alumnus on Friday, 20 December 2024. The discussion covered the management of competing priorities on a large campus, avenues to engage more directly with the university, as well as opportunities that exist for the global alumni community to support their alma mater.
Most of the matters and concerns raised were addressed by our colleagues in the relevant departments, and for this I am thankful.
Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Let us continue to cultivate the habit of excellence in all that we do. Let us embrace all feedback with curiosity, appreciation and humility because we know continuous feedback can only make us better. And let us continue to responsibly engage within our community.
I invite you once more, if you are interested and invested in UCT’s success and sustainability, to participate in the Campus-wide Conversations by emailing Conversations.
Yours sincerely
Professor Mosa Moshabela
UCT Vice-Chancellor & Principal
